Choking Hazards

Posted by babyfeva on Sunday Mar 7, 2010 Under Uncategorized

hot-dog-redesignAt dinner tonight, my cousins were sharing a story they read on the redesign of the hot dog.  We had just ordered our 3 year old son a hot dog and fries from the kids menu.  I immediately found the article when I got home.  The American Academy of Pediatrics would like to see a redesign of the hot dog.  They state that it is the number one cause of choking in kids 3 and younger and  is  a relatively unaddressed problem for children in the U.S.  Not only are hot dogs on the list but grapes, hard candy, peanuts, raw carrots and chewing gum.  Our son has been eating hot dogs (supervised) for a while and I just introduced chewing gum to him.  I will definitly re-think what I give to him in the future and may try to come up with re-designs of my own.  Check out some of the redesigns suggested by the Chicago Tribune.  What do you think?

Toxic Bath Toys

Posted by babyfeva on Thursday Mar 4, 2010 Under Uncategorized

clownfish-bath-toyThe Today Show investigated a number of bath toys to see if they harbored nasty germs. I totally tuned in this morning because my three year old has plenty of these toys for his bathtime. My husband and I wondered about this but we did not expect to hear that some of these toys were highly contaminated with bacteria. Philip Tierno, a microbiologist at NYU Langone Medical Center is a top expert on household germs. He stated, “Bath water literally becomes a bacterial soup. The toys are the depository of these organisms and they can live and grow within that toy.” What did they find you ask? They found fecal bacteria such as E. coli and Strep. They also found staph aureus, a bacteria that causes skin infections. The most bacteria found were in toys with holes in them (you know those really awesome toys that most kids love to play with!) Well, in our house we are going to do some bath toy purging. Those toys that we keep will be soaked in alcohol or peroxide as recommended by Tierno. Another recommendation is to allow toys to air dry in an area free of moisture. Have you checked your child’s bath toys?

Tommee Tippee Products

Posted by babyfeva on Friday Feb 19, 2010 Under Product Reviews

tommee-tippee-explora-sippy-cuptommee-tippee-closer-to-nature-baby-bottleTommee Tippee, number one maker of infant and toddler feeding products in the UK, has a great line of bottles and sippy cups for your feeding needs.  They are known for their Closer to Nature line of bottles as well as the Explora Sippy Cups and are looking to break into the US market.   I really like the Closer to Nature baby bottles.  They claim to mimic the natural breastfeeding action and provide a flow rate that is appropriate for children of certain ages.  The shape and texture of the valve allows the baby to more easily latch on.  There is even a vent to prevent colic and gas.  Another BabyFeva favorite is the Explora  Sippy Cup.  Its advanced flo technology encourages easy drinking while remaining completely spill proof.    To top it all off, both products are BPA free!  At least this eliminates one worry for all of you moms out there.  Keep an eye out for these products and more at you nearest Babies R Us!

Disclosure:  Baby Feva received products free from Tommee Tippee and I am a reviewer for the Mom Bloggers Club.

Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse, Snowzilla

Posted by babyfeva on Thursday Feb 11, 2010 Under Daydreaming

2010-blizzard-005I am a native Michigander, now residing in a suburb of Maryland, outside of DC.   I cannot recall in my 35, almost 36 years, seeing 50 plus inches of snow fall within a one week span!  This is definitely something we will not see again in our lifetime (we hope).  Our neighborhood was completely buried in snow and it took almost 4 days for us to dig out.  The county in which we live did not even have us on their clean up map.  We tried to flag down private plows and they completely ignored us.  You could feel people starting to get stir crazy, digging from their house into the street.   Even with that accomplished, there was still 27 inches in the middle of the street preventing any cars form getting in or out.  It took about 10 people to ban together to completely dig out a path for cars to get through.  It was an amazing thing to witness.  My three year old son was even out there shoveling snow.  When times like these happen it generally brings people together.   I know one thing for sure, the Snowmageddon, Snowpocaplypse, Snowzilla or whatever you want to call it has forced people to slow down, spend precious time with family and friends and  come together as a community to help those in need.  I can’t complain when receiving those gifts.  Tell me how you survived the storm.  Stay warm!

I Did My Chores!

Posted by babyfeva on Sunday Jan 10, 2010 Under Product Reviews

my-precious-kid-reward-chartMy Precious Kid was nice enough to send me with a Reward Chore Chart appropriate for kids 3 years and up.  This chore chart was actually seen on Law and Order SVU.  My son was very excited to get it in the mail.  We opened it immediately and began organizing the cards.  The chart came with 48 stickers with pictures and words that corresponded with different chores.  Those stickers can be placed cards that are color coded for time of day.  There are also tokens that come with the chart that are used to reward your child for each chore done.  Once all of this is organized, let the chores begin!  My husband was not totally on board with it.  His belief  is that chores are a part of your household responsibilty and that no rewards should be given.  Although we may not use this in our household, I’m sure there are many parents out there looking for a solution to chasing after their kids to finish the chores.   My Precious Kid and Baby Feva will be hosting a giveaway soon so stay tuned!
